Jason was stunned. “How? We’ve worked
together so many times without a single
problem!”
The call ended before he could explain.
I handled everything; he was a hands–off manager. He’d just praised Brittany, and now this happened. Too embarrassed to ask me for help, he frowned at Brittany.
“What happened? Didn’t you say it was handled?”
Brittany’s face was grim. “She’s awful! She said that about my hard work!” “It’s just a small project. Whatever.”
Jason’s eyes twitched. “That’s a hundred million dollar penalty!”
The company wasn’t big enough to afford

Her complaints explained things.

Jason blamed me and scolded me. I’d

The client was furious, complaining that

I refused. I took the blame, demoted and with
a pay cut. I apologized to the client, even

knew but let her do it, framing me.
Jason didn’t notice my reaction. He scolded
Brittany, then sighed.
“Forget it. Your skill is obvious. I don’t expect
much from you.”
He looked at me fondly. “Eleanor, you’re
amazing. I’m sure you can solve this. You
always handle tough projects and demanding
clients. I was wrong. Brittany is nowhere near
as good as you, my dear wife.”
Before I could refuse, Brittany was jealous.
“Jason, I’m not that bad!”
Jason scolded her. “Shut up! This is all your
fault! Being VP was just for fun and showing
off. Your skills aren’t good enough to handle

for Brittany was sincere; his praise for me

I used to love his sweet words, but now I
