Chapter 15
Savannah had been living overseas for five years.
In those five years, she graduated from the College of Art & Design and successfully opened her own studio.
Surprisingly, her life without Grayson had gone… pretty smoothly.
But what truly no one expected was that she’d run into Damien Shaw.
The very same Damien–her childhood fiancé, promised to her before she was even born.
The Langley and Shaw families had been close for generations, both longtime business dynasties in Crestmoor Heights.
The engagement had been made as a joke between the pregnant mothers.
If both had sons, they’d be brothers.
If both had girls, they’d become chosen sisters.
But if one was a boy and the other a girl, then they’d be in–laws.
Right after Savannah was born, however, she was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect.
Her father, Edward Langley, was a man of pride and honour. Even though the Shaws said they didn’t mind, he still chose to call off the engagement himself.
Still, Damien had always looked after Savannah like family–until age ten, when the Shaw family expanded their business abroad.
After careful consideration, they relocated permanently. From then on, the two families gradually lost touch.
Edward never told them about the bankruptcy, nor his passing. He didn’t want to burden his old friend.
Savannah still remembered–fresh off the plane, dragging a broken leg behind her, pain blinding her vision.
Eventually, her body gave out. She collapsed at the airport, surrounded by strangers gawking at the spectacle.
In a foreign country, unfamiliar faces everywhere, and her body wracked with pain…
She nearly cried right there on the floor. Damien had been at the airport dropping off a client.
Even after all those years, he recognized her the second he laid eyes on her.
He called her name hesitantly, “Savannah…?”
Her eyes instantly welled up with tears.
Just like when they were kids, Damien took off his coat and covered her injured leg with it.
“Don’t be scared, Savvy. I’m taking you to the hospital right now.”
Luckily, they hadn’t lost too much time. Her leg was reattached.
Once she was stable, Damien finally dared ask, “Savvy… tell me the truth. Who broke your leg?”
Savannah hesitated, “No one. I… I fell.”
Damien turned away, fists clenched.
“After all these years, you’re lying to me now?”
His hand trembled on the edge of her bed. “It was Grayson, wasn’t it?”
“How do you…”
Savannah opened her mouth, about to ask how he knew that name-

But then she realized. Maybe Damien had been watching over her all these years, quietly.
He suddenly slammed his fist against the metal bedframe,
“I’m going to find that bastard and make him pay.”
He turned to storm out, but Savannah lunged halfway off the bed, grabbing his arm tightly.
“Damien, please don’t.”
If he went back now, Grayson would surely track her down. Come after her again.
But Savannah had left everything behind.
She just wanted to be free.
Damien clearly got the message.
Still, the rage in his chest refused to settle. The girl he’d protected so tenderly growing up–how had she ended up like this?
“You… you ran away, didn’t you?”
She stayed silent, which was answer enough.
Damien’s heart ached. “Savvy… what am I supposed to do with you?”
“If I’d known what that bastard was doing to you, I would’ve taken you away a long time ago.”
Savannah just shook her head.
She didn’t deny it–she’d truly loved Grayson.
And she never regretted those days when they were in love.
But now? She wasn’t just heartbroken. She was bitter.
Bitter enough to never want to see him again.
After her recovery, Damien brought her into the Shaw household. Mr. Shaw was devastated when he heard Edward had passed.
He’d hated himself for not being there to help. So now, all his guilt was poured into making things right with Savannah.
Mr. and Mrs. Shaw treated her like their own daughter. The moment they held her hands, both of them were in tears.
“Savannah, if Grayson doesn’t want you–we do.”
“You’ll stay here from now on. We’ll be your family.”
Since her father’s death, no one had shown her this kind of warmth.
She broke down, crying into their arms.
Mrs. Shaw’s heart nearly shattered at the sound. She gently patted her back, whispering, “Our sweet girl must’ve suffered so much.”
They funded her education, giving her space to create her art.
They even contacted top specialists around the world, determined to cure her heart condition.
Savannah was moved beyond words.
“I’ve had this illness my whole life. I’m used to it–it’s really not that bad.”
Mrs. Shaw scolded her softly, “Don’t say that. No one should have to live with something like this.”
Savannah may have learned to live with it. But Damien and his parents never gave up.

Finally, after five years of treatment–today was her last surgery.
The doctors said if this operation succeeded, she’d have a chance at full recovery.
Damien was a bundle of nerves, personally begging the doctors to do their best.

When Savannah was wheeled out, everyone held their breath.
The doctor pulled off his mask and smiled. “The surgery was a success.”
Damien’s legs gave out. He sank into the chair behind him, tears of joy spilling down his cheeks.
