Chapter 6
Savannah’s heart condition had flared up, and because she didn’t get treatment in time, she spent the entire night in emergency care before being moved to a regular ward.
Grayson got the call from the hospital the next morning–while lounging on a beach in the Maldives.
“The patient, Savannah Langley, listed you as her emergency contact,” the doctor said over the phone.
He froze for a second, then quickly booked the next flight home–with Madeline, perfectly made–up and clinging to his side.
He burst into the hospital room to find Savannah curled up on the pale bed, looking so fragile it made his chest tighten.
A wave of guilt crashed over him. He softened his tone. “Savannah… I’m sorry. I should’ve been here sooner.”
She lay still, silent, not even looking at him.
Grayson swallowed hard, trying to explain. “About the calls yesterday… I didn’t mean to ignore you. I just… wanted to teach you a
lesson.”
After a long, suffocating silence, Madeline suddenly burst into tears beside him.
“Savannah, if you’re mad, then blame me. I was the one who begged him to go on vacation. You two have been together for so many
years… Don’t let it all go to waste because of me.”
She raised her hand and slapped herself across the face. “If you’re too weak to hit me, I’ll do it for you. I’ll keep hitting myself until you forgive him.”
“I mean it. I’ll stop when you forgive him.”
Grayson panicked, grabbing Madeline’s wrist. “What the hell are you doing?! This isn’t your fault. If someone has to take the blame, it’s me. I’ll never let her hurt you.”
Savannah felt like she was watching a farce.
She hadn’t said a word. And yet somehow, she was the villain in this twisted little drama?
She shut her eyes and rasped, “Get out. Both of you. I need some peace.”
Once they left, the tension coiled inside her finally let go. Drained, she slipped into a restless sleep–only to be jolted awake by the crash
of the door slamming open.
Grayson stormed in and flung a folder onto her bed.
“Read it yourself! You weren’t even hospitalized for heart failure last night! There was no emergency resuscitation!”
“This is a certified report. What more do you want to say?!”
He hated being lied to more than anything–especially when it came to sympathy plays like this.
Madeline clung to his arm with a wounded look. “Savannah… if you just wanted Grayson’s attention, you could’ve said so. Why lie?”
“If I hadn’t gone to ask the doctor directly, we’d still be in the dark about all this.”
Grayson’s entire body radiated cold fury. The contempt in his eyes was impossible to miss.
“Savannah Using a stunt like this for pity? Your father would be proud.”
It was the second time he’d dragged her father into it–always as a knife, always to wound.
Savannah jolted upright, grabbed the glass of water off her nightstand, and hurled it at them.
“Get out! Both of you get the hell out!”
The glass shattered against the wall, shards flying A piece caught Madeline on the shin, leaving a thin red scratch.

Madeline glanced down at the cut and gasped behind her hand. “Is this your punishment, Savannah? That’s okay. If it’s from you, I’ll take it. As long as it makes you feel better.”
Grayson stared at the wound, his frown deepening. “Stop talking nonsense. I’ll get you patched up.”
He bent down, scooped her up in his arms, and headed for the door. As he passed Savannah’s bed, he left her with one last ice–cold remark. “If you’re fine, then go home. Don’t waste hospital resources.”
Madeline ended up with nothing more than a small band–aid.
Before they left the hospital, she found an excuse to slip away and sneak back into Savannah’s room alone.
The second the door shut, her sweet mask dropped–replaced by open, gloating malice.
“Like the ‘gift‘ I brought back from the Maldives?” she sneered.
“You had the nerve to interrupt my vacation. This is what you get.”
She leaned down and whispered near Savannah’s ear, voice dripping with poison. “Guess what? This isn’t over. There’s a bigger surprise coming.”
“Get ready, Savannah. Game ten of our little missing–girl series is about to begin.”
