CHAPTER 6
She must have passed out, because when she opened her eyes, she was in the hospital.
The first thing she did was touch her stomach. “My baby… is my baby okay?”
The look on the doctor’s face confirmed her worst nightmare before he even said anything.
“No…” she shook her head. “No… please.”
“I’m so sorry Mrs Kane,” the doctor said. “But by the time you came in here, you were dehydrated and hadn’t eaten in days. And with the fall… I’m sorry, but there was nothing we could do to save your baby.”
No. This couldn’t be happening. It felt like she could still feel her baby. There had been life growing inside of her just hours ago. It couldn’t just be gone. Just like that.
She didn’t know when she started crying.
“Mrs Kane, your body still needs to heal from the trauma, and I would suggest avoiding stress. Where is your husband? He has to take care of you during this delicate time.”
It took everything in her not to scream. She shook her head and answered him with all the hate
in her. “I do not have a husband.”
“When can I leave the hospital?”
“You have to be closely monitored for at least three days, the doctor answered.
Madelynn nodded. That was just in time for Sebastian to come and get her. She could wait three days.
Just then, the door to her private room opened. Oliver walked him, breathing heavily like he hac run there. Cecelia was behind him.
“What are you doing here?”
“I heard about—”
She didn’t let him finish. “You starved me for days till I could barely move, and now I’m here-
”
“Oh please, Maddy,” Cecelia cut her off. “It was just for a few days. I didn’t know you were such a weakling.”
Oliver looked at her, suddenly feeling pity from nowhere. “Why did you have to be so stubborn, Madelynn? All you had to do was apologize. If you had just done that, we wouldn’t be here.”
“And if you felt so unwell, why didn’t you call me?”
Madelynn scoffed bitterly. “Call you? The same you who has never answered the phone whenever I needed you?”
Calling him would’ve been a waste of time. When he was with Cecelia, nothing else mattered. Especially not Madelynn. And why was he acting like it wasn’t his fault that she was in this situation anyway?
Oliver must’ve felt guilty for his actions, because he started visiting the hospital everyday after that.
Madelynn kept Sebastian updated everyday, and when he insisted he would come see her the first day she arrived at the hospital, she told him there was no need. He could finish his work and
then come and get her.
Oliver didn’t fail to notice that she was now glued to her phone all the time. Something that she never used to do.
“Madelynn, who have you been texting?” He finally asked, reaching out to grab the phone.
Madelynn pulled it out of his reach. “I didn’t know I had to answer to you about every single thing
now.”
At her words, Oliver withdrew his hand. “Well, that’s enough texting now. We should head home.” “Right,” she murmured. Madelynn knew better than to fall for his nice gestures. It was only because he was currently feeling guilty. Once she forgave him, he would go right back to his old
ways.
The second he dropped her off at home, he left.
Madelynn didn’t waste any time. She pulled out the miscarriage report from the hospital and added it to her other two presents in the bedroom safe.
Then she took out a notebook and scribbled a message.
We were going to have a baby. But she’s gone now. You killed her. And this is the last thing you’ ever do to me.]
She placed the note inside the safe.
Divorce papers, a resignation letter and a miscarriage report.
Those were her final wedding anniversary presents to Oliver Kane.
She packed her small duffel bag when she was done. Then she placed her set of keys on the kitchen counter and deleted her facial recognition features from the smart lock on the door.
She erased every last bit of her from the villa.
t would be like she was never there.
