Xander POV
Serafine is settled with Eryx, her magic is once again under control, so I’m beginning to think it was more a warning that something was coming than her not being able to control. The issue is that she still needs to learn to control it.
Magic isn’t unheard of among wolves, but magic that can weild itself away from the host, that’s against the laws. I’m doing everything I can to keep it hidden, from my pack, from other packs.
People in my pack shouldn’t react to it, but it’s safer if fewer people find out.
“More people are hearing of Serafine and Eryx. It means that any issues, people are looking to them to blame.” Garrick circles another part of the map.
“Serafine and Eryx are not the cause,” I argue.
“We don’t know that, these issues began around the time Eryx was born,” Killian says.
“Serafine and Eryx are not the cause, we will figure it out, but not if you’re focused on it being them.”
Garrick sighs. “Okay, it’s not them causing it. But, hypothetically, if it was, what is the way to fixing it?”
He stares at me and waits.
“Serafine,” I say quietly.
“Then let’s talk to her, get it sorted out as much as possible. The more answers we have, the better a chance we have of figuring it out. You still don’t
know about Threadborn, or yourself, why you have a Silvermane Hound.”
I know that he’s right, but I would rather not have her more focused on this than on her figuring out her magic.
“Let’s see what we can work out without her first. I want her focused on the magic, on training herself and handling it. If I begin asking questions about all this, then she will be more focused on this than her magic.”
“Okay, so let’s see what each pack has found, any changes they reported, see if anything overlaps,” Killian walks over and looks at the maps.
“Okay, let’s start looking at what there is outside them. We’re focusing on the packs, right, but what if the issue lies outside them? How much space is between each affected area?”
He begins measuring, and I realise we didn’t consider that. A lot of the packs are looking toward us, seeing us as the cause because our crops haven’t gone yet. Right now, we’re the only ones actively trying to work out exactly what’s causing it.
“Nothing is the same; distances are different between them all.” Killian leans over the map more. “What else can we look at?“.
“I’m not seeing links with the packs, none of them have made deals that overlap or link. None are using items that are the sam There’s no link between the packs, Alpha.” Garrick looks at me.
“Okay. What about the dates, times?” I look at them, and they begin searching. “Anything?” I don’t want to involve Serafine, but right now, it’s looking like we might need to.
I pace the room and watch hours pass by while they try to figure out everything. We’ve had no luck, but I haven’t given up. I’m still pushing for more, for some sort of answer that leads away from Serafine and Eryx.
I know this is foolish and a waste of time, but can’t accept it yet.
“Nothing Alpha, we’ve checked everything, the only pack we haven’t looked into is this one. We’ve checked every other pack, what’s new, what’s changed, everything. You need to accept this!”

“Okay, what do we need to know?” I ask
Killian leans back in his chair. “What a threadborn is, what it means, just ask her what she knows. Everything, no matter how small the detail is, if she knows something, you need to be told.”

“Garrick’s right,” Killian says. “You want to keep her out of danger, and stop her from being a target, get the answers that we need now.”
“And consider something else,” Garrick says. “Moving, I’m not saying leave the pack, I’m saying find somewhere to stay, or travel with her and Eryx until the magic part is solved, then she’s not near people and at risk.”
“We’re not traveling,” I argue.
“What about this pack, Xander? You think people don’t know? Packs are talking, people in this pack have heard about her, about what she is. Your own pack won’t sit back if things start to get worse.”
Of course, people have found out. “We will hold a meeting, not yet though. Ensure the borders are secure, we need to ensure no one can get in.” “We’ve got it covered, the guardians are here, well, they come and go, they keep patrolling but coming back as well to check on Eryx.”
I nod slowly. “Leave the guardians, Eryx’s safety is the priority after getting news of people wanting to get to him to use him. Are there still round–the- clock guards at the crops?”
Killian shakes his head. “It’s wasted manpower, whatever it is; it skipped this pack, Xander. You either want the pack protected or you want to waste resources on something that you can’t control anyway.”
“Fine, just make sure the pack is secure, I’ll speak to Serafine now.” I,walk out and head to our room, I know she will be there. It’s the place she’s been hiding away. I now have to tell her there’s no other cause, except for her and Eryx.
