I make my way into the building, I can feel it, the tension, his anger. I don’t wait though, it’s late now, the sun has set, and I begin to move with purpose. I know he will know a lot about what’s going on.
As I step into the room, my mother is talking in that tone that is trying to calm and reason, and I know he knows. As soon as I’m in the room, he turns to face me.
“You made a portal?” he demands. “Right here, in our pack territory?”
“What else was I to do? You never let me leave the pack,” I argue back.
“Sit down, Eryx, right now.” Her words are harsh and I listen, I move and sit down with him.
My mother smiles softly at me and I turn to face him. “You wouldn’t understand, and you can’t. You’ve never been pushed around, bullied and forced to do things you don’t want. You’ve never been treated like an object and ordered to never leave. You’ve never had your freedom taken from you.”
“This isn’t about me, Eryx, this is about you and your reckless behaviour. That portal needs to be closed, tonight. I can not risk someone from that pack finding it and coming through.”
I scoff. “I’ve ensured no one can see it.”
“But if they do?” he asks. “Then what? Not only did you put yourself and this pack at risk, your mother would be as well, and so would your sister. Then what, Eryx? How are you going to protect them when this pack will be destroyed in minutes, because they will use your mother and sister as leverage.”
My mouth opens then shuts.
“You want to believe that this won’t happen, that April’s father is a kind man, he isn’t. So if you think he will spare your mother or sister, you’re sadly mistaken.”
“If you had let me leave, I wouldn’t have felt the need to sneak around and do that.”
“Talking to me would be the adult thing to do, you keep arguing you’re an adult but doing things that prove you’re not.”
My head shakes. “I am an adult, but I won’t sit around and wait for you to see that. You want me to sit here and wait for you approval for everything, and that’s not how the world works.”
“That’s how this pack works,” he snaps.
“Eryx, just agree to close the portal.” My mother looks at me.
“I can’t, because then it’s four days travel to see April.” Sighing, I look between them. “Okay, if I agree to close to portal will you agree to reach out so that April can come here?” Lask.
“You mean like last night?” he asks, then looks to my mother. “I know, I caught her scent, and followed it outside, but I couldn’t see her. I knew she was
here, Eryx.”
Well, that just means it’s one less thing to tell him about.
“Can I ask you something, when mother left you, how did you feel?” I ask.
“That’s entirely different, she had been living here with me, we spent a lot of time together, the bond had built, I had claimed her, it wasn’t something that was just here and there.”
Is that what he thinks? “You think April is just something here and there, and not serious?” I ask.

“What am I meant to think, tight now you two see each other in secret, there’s nothing there, the situations are entirely different.”
“But it’s not! The pain you felt when mother was gone is how I feel every time I leave her, how can you not agree to help me, I’m your son!”
He stares at me for a moment.

“I never ask for anything, not really, and you can’t do this one thing for me? She’s my mate, and I’m going to lose her because you won’t try to solve this rift between the packs, or at least speak to them so April can come here.”
He looks from me to my mother then sighs. “You love her?” he asks.
“What sort of question is that? Yes, I do. Not that it matters as her parents are planning to marry her to some guy, then what? I lose my mate for life?” I
ask.
“We can’t force her parents to agree to let her be with you Eryx, that isn’t how it works. We don’t have power over her pack.”
I scoff. “You’re the most feared Alpha, you have the rogues in your pocket, you can make it happen if you truly cared enough to do it!”
His head shakes. “That doesn’t mean I cand demand people do things with their daughters and packs. I wish I can, but all I can do is have a conversation
with them.”
“Surely giving them what they want to stop the war would work?” I suggest.
“Do you know what they want?” he asks. I don’t, but I’m sure it would be worth it. I would get April. “No, you don’t. They know about your mothers power, yours and your sisters. They want one of you to live in the pack. They want to use one of you to strengthen their pack, to build boarders, and create objects that can be used in battles to help them win.”
Maybe that’s not so bad? I consider it.
“That means, all that magic would be linked to this pack, if someone went to war with them, we would be seen as on their side and helping. We would get dragged into petty wars. Think about it, Eryx. That pack is hated by most, so us giving them magic, is like saying we agree with them.”
“Then what do we do?” I ask.
He looks at me, then toward my mother.
My body jolts as something burns, through my, screaming, I fall to the floor. My neck is burning.
“Eryx!” My mother screams and rushes to me.
I fight back the screams, but struggle as the burning intensifies and goes to my head. Clutching it I scream louder.
“You claimed her,” my father shouts.
Clutching my head, I cry out.
“Someone else has bitten over his claim,” my mother whispers, and I fight to stand up, I need to get to her. As I take a step, my breathing fails and I struggle to suck in a breath.
“April,” I gasp, trying to breath, but it’s like someone is choking me.
“Eryx!” My mothers scream is the last thing I hear as I pass out.
