Sarah’s mother was filled with helplessness.
She continued to persuade me.
“Tom, these three years I’ve treated you as
my son–in–law. The Thompsons came to me
after Sarah divorced Mark.”
“They don’t care that Sarah was married and
pregnant. They just want someone to care for
their paralyzed son. I couldn’t refuse.”
“Many of the Miller family’s businesses rely
L
on the Thompsons…”
Sarah’s mother rambled on, trying to get me
to change my mind.
I sighed, my tone even.
“Mrs. Miller, Sarah and I, and the Millers, have
nothing to do with each other anymore. I
appreciate your care, but you know I won’t go
back.”
“Even if Sarah finds me, I won’t go back.”
Sarah’s mother didn’t expect this and could
only sigh helplessly.
Suddenly, Sarah’s crying voice came from the
other end of the phone.
“Mom! Let me speak to Tom! Let me talk to
him!”
After hearing her voice, I hung up.
Sarah still found me.
<
After all, she was her child; Sarah’s mother
wouldn’t let Sarah suffer.
Upon seeing me, she was like someone who
had found a lost treasure; she rushed forward
and hugged me tightly.
She cried uncontrollably, her tears falling on
my shoulder.
“Why didn’t you tell me? I did so many wrong
things to you, why didn’t you say anything?”
“Mark ran away, just like my ex–boyfriend;
they all ran away.
“My mother told me she gave them a huge
amount of money, and they abandoned me
the moment they saw the money.”
“Mark and I also got a divorce certificate.
See?”
Sarah wiped away her tears and showed me
<
two divorce certificates with trembling hands.
Just like before, when she threw her marriage
certificate with Mark at me.
I looked her over.
