“In a fight?” Brian’s heart skipped a bit. “How is Jacob?”
The teacher replied, “Mr. Atkinson, please don’t worry. Jacob’s fine, but he did hit another kid.”
Brian said, “Thanks for letting me know. I’ll be there right away.”
He let out a quiet sigh of relief after hanging up and instinctively reached for his phone to call Jessica. But he then realized she wouldn’t pick up. and she definitely wouldn’t come to the school to check on Jacob.
He couldn’t help but rub his temples. It seemed like ever since Jessica left, things had just gotten messier.
Brian soon came to Hartdale International Bilingual School.
Brian reached the teacher’s office and saw Jacob grabbing another kid by the shirt and threatening him. “I’m gonna tear your mouth apart. You better keep your mouth shut next time, or I swear I’ll beat you to a pulp.”
A female teacher had one hand on Jacob, pulling him back while standing between the two boys.
Waytt, apologize to me right now.” Jacob didn’t let go of the other kid’s shirt. His face was twisted with anger as he shouted, “Have you learned your
lesson?”
Waytt Davis was crying so hard that he could barely breathe. He clinged to his mother, Amanda Davis.
Brian frowned and walked over, pulling Jacob in front of him.
“Dad.” The moment Jacob saw Brian, the rage in his eyes faded. Jacob bit his lip, still glaring at the kid he had just beaten up.
“Well, you’re his father, right?” Amanda looked Brian up and down and then immediately wrapped her arms around her crying son. “Look what your son did.
“How dare he beat my boy? My husband and I wouldn’t even hurt him a bit. How dare he!”
Brian didn’t bat an eye at Amanda’s insults. He stood tall in his perfectly tailored suit. Amanda could tell that everything about him screamed wealth and power.
Amanda’s voice turned nasty. “Pay up, or I’ll sue you. I’ll make sure your son can’t show his face at school again.”
“Oh, poor Waytt, he’s only six, and now he suffered violence like this. What about his mental health? What if this messes with his studies? What’s gonna happen to him in the future?” She kept going, laying it on thick about how much her son suffered.
Brian just stared at her with cold eyes.
Amanda seemed to sense his silence and snapped, “You gotta pay for everything I just said, or we will have to meet in court.”
Once Amanda stopped ranting, Brian finally bent down and asked Jacob, “Why did you hit him?”
“He deserved it,” Jacob shot back, his face scrunched up in defiance. “I didn’t do anything wrong, and I’m not apologizing to him.”
Jacob pouted, ready to block whatever Brian was about to say next. “He started it. He insulted me first.”
“Is that so?” Brian turned his cold gaze to the teacher. The teacher nodded with an awkward smile.
Hearing that, Amanda sneered, “Just some insults are not the excuse for violence. Even if my son did insult him, he shouldn’t have hit back.”
Amanda felt her son was in the right because whoever threw the first punch was the one to blame.
Brian didn’t feel like arguing with her. He took Jacob’s hand firmly and promised, “I’ll make it right.”
“Oh, how funny.” Amanda let out a sarcastic laugh. “Your son hit my son, and you think you have a right to be mad? Just you wait, my husband’s on his way. I’m sure he will knock some sense into you.”
Amanda lifted her chin arrogantly, the pearls around her neck glistening as she strutted.
She was all too proud of her husband, the head of the project team at Atkinson Group’s headquarters. With connections like that, she didn’t believe anyone would dare mess with them.
