“I … I’ll head back now. I’ll be at work in the afternoon,” Jessica said, not wanting to delay her work any further.
“There’s no rush. You’ve got a head injury; it’s fine to take some time off.” Charles replied, worried about her unstable emotional state and fearing she wasn’t in the right frame of mind for work.
Jessica shook her head. “I’ve already taken a few days off due to my foot injury. If I keep taking leave, people will start talking. You might end up having to fire me.”
A slight smile played on Charles’s lips. “I approve the leave. Who’s going to object?”
His gaze was intense, making Jessica look away. “I’ll be going up now.” She quickly exited the car. heading towards the building without looking back.
Jessica couldn’t shake the feeling that Charles’s attitude towards her had shifted.
Later that day, Jessica attended Jake’s funeral to pay her final respects.
If it weren’t for him, she would have been the one who lost her life.
The police had closed the case, blaming the drunk driver who had caused the accident.
Leaving the cemetery, Jessica walked into a light drizzle. She took out her umbrella and, as she opened it, her phone beeped with a new message.
The message made her expression change instantly.
The message read, “This time, someone else took the hit for you. Next time, you might not be so lucky!”
It was from an unknown number.
Jessica’s hand trembled as she held the phone. She had suspected it wasn’t just a random drunk driving accident!

Clenching her fists, Jessica vowed she wouldn’t let this go. She had to seek justice for Jake. She owed it to him.
While still consumed by her fury, her phone rang. It was Arthur’s teacher. Ms. Pearl.
Jessica tried to suppress her emotions as she answered the call, “Hello? Ms. Pearl?”
“Is this Arthur’s mother? You need to come to the school immediately. Arthur is missing.” Ms.. Pearl said, her voice frantic.
Jessica’s mind went blank for a moment. “What? What happened to Arthur?”
Unable to elaborate over the phone, Serena urged her to come quickly.
As soon as the call ended, Jessica hurried out, her face lined with worry. A Maybach pulled up in front of her, forcing her to stop.
Recognizing the car, she saw Charles step out.
Charles had come because of Jake’s funeral but also because he knew Jessica would be there.
Seeing her distressed expression, Charles frowned slightly. “What’s wrong?”
Jessica’s panic was evident. “Arthur… his teacher said he’s missing. I need to get to the school!”
Charles’s eyes darkened, “What?”
“Get in. I’ll drive you,” he said, quickly returning to the driver’s seat, his demeanor calm but his eyes icy.
Jessica didn’t hesitate and got in the car.
They arrived at the school in no time. Ms. Pearl, seeing their tense faces, felt both anxious and fearful, especially under Charles’s icy gaze.
“Ms. Pearl, what happened? How did Arthur go missing?” Jessica immediately asked.
Serena, avoiding direct eye contact, explained the situation.
The class had an outdoor activity today, and several teachers, including herself, took the students to plant trees. After the activity, Arthur was nowhere to be found.
The school had searched the area thoroughly but couldn’t find him. Fearing the worst, they called Jessica.
After hearing Serena’s account, Charles ordered Flint to send out a search party to find the child.
Jessica felt her heart tighten in agony. She turned to search for Arthur herself.
