Chapter 10
She used to be so into him that she knew him the best. She knew how to irritate this arrogant and indifferent man.
Just as she had expected, Xavier got that ticked–off look after hearing what she said. He shoved her off and went back to his icy self.
Winona’s heart still sank a bit, seeing him act like she was way off base. Her little trick worked, but it hurt her as well.
After a last look at her, Xavier turned and left. Stunned for quite a while, Winona forced a smile, more firm in her decision. She knew she was right to walk away. She used to think if she was sincere enough, she’d eventually win his heart. Turned out, he wasn’t just not into her. He loved Eliza, And Winona wasn’t about to steal him from her. With that thought, she blinked back the burn in her eyes and went to her room.
Xavier, back in his car and still pissed, checked out her now–dark window. With a scowl, he shot a text to his buddies. [Come out for a drink.]
Ryan Lewis pushed the door open. He glanced at Xavier, who was playing with the lighter on the couch, sat beside him, and looked him up down. “Why did you call us out for drinks so late? Is it about Eliza?” Ryan asked.
Xavier quit fiddling with the lighter and looked at Ryan.
With raised eyebrows and a teasing grin, Ryan stroked his own chin. “What’s got you? Or is there another girl?”
Saying nothing, Xavier poured him a glass of wine and said, “Why does it have to be about her?”

“That’s weird. What happened then? I saw Christine’s post on Instagram. Eliza had a car accident. Why are you here drinking instead of taking care of Eliza in the hospital?” Ryan asked.
After he finished, the door was pushed open again. Zachary Roberts came just in time to catch Ryan’s comment and gave Xavier a knowing look. “Perhaps it’s not about Eliza.”
“What?” Ryan was curious.
Zachary sat down, poured himself a glass of wine, and said slowly, “Is it about Winona?”
Hearing her name, Xavier paused and threw the lighter to the table. He leaned backward, rubbed his forehead, and pursed his lips, showing that he was not in a good mood.
Surprised, Ryan chuckled. “Winona got under your skin, huh? Wondering how to dump her?” He always found Winona to be something. The Patterson family thought she was Xavier’s perfect match.
But Zachary shook his head at his words, saying nothing.
Xavier thought for a while and said, “You guys think I’m dumping her?”
Ryan raised his eyebrows and said, “Aren’t you? After all, you didn’t want to marry her at the very beginning. And now Eliza’s back, so we know what you’re thinking.”
“Not me. I know nothing,” said Zachary.
Xavier opened his eyes slowly. “Would you believe that I never wanted to divorce her?”
Ryan shook his head at once. “No way. You’re all about Eliza, and now she’s here. Are you gonna break her heart?”
Zachary looked at Ryan, speechless.
“She asked for a divorce, Xavier suddenly said.
Ryan, who was drinking, almost spat out the wine. He looked at Xavier in shock. “What did you say?”
Zachary stared at him with a sigh. “He said that Winona asked for a divorce.”
“What? She asked for it? That’s way beyond my expectation.” Ryan was astonished.
Xavier pursed his lips, his face stone–cold.
Ryan shut up. He couldn’t believe that Winona would divorce Xavier so easily. After all, she begged him to marry him, and everyone knew how much she loved him.
