Chapter 18
Another ten days passed, and Diane’s 75th birthday has come. No matter what, Winona had to attend the birthday party.
“Wish you good health, Mrs. Patterson” Some guests came to greet Diane. “Happy birthday, Mrs. Patterson?
Winona arrived early. She gave Diane the gift in advance and chatted with her for a while. Then more and more people came to celebrate her birthday, Winona didn’t want to attract attention, nor did she want to cause trouble, so she sat down in a corner. But with her knockout looks, Winona drew stares even though she kept a low profile.
“Do you know that woman?” several ladies from the upper class in Curtia whispered to each other.
“No, I guess she’s not one of us. She is so beautiful. Is she a star?” one of the girls said.
“Maybe. Perhaps she’s here with some loaded guy, someone assumed.
“Probably… her friend echoed
By then, Xavier and his friends had arrived. Eyes shifted to the girl with Christine, tagging along behind Xavier.
“Mrs. Patterson, happy birthday. This is my gift for you” Eliza said in a soft voice, handing over her carefully picked present.
The moment Diane saw Eliza, her smile disappeared. Now that Winona had told her about it, she realized Eliza’s voice was really similar to Winona’s, Diane glared at Xavier and said, “Why did you bring her here? Trying to piss me off?”
Eliza’s expression froze and she was at a loss. She looked at Xavier pitifully, hoping he could help her.
Christine jumped in for Eliza, “Grandma, she’s just here to wish you well.”
Diane just buffed.
Xavier glanced at Eliza, narrowed his eyes, and said, “Grandma, she’s a guest, anyway. Everyone is watching”
With a scowl, Diane signaled, and someone finally took the gift from Eliza’s hands.
Eliza breathed a sigh of relief and showed a gentle and sweet smile. But the next second, Diane suddenly shouted, “Winona, where is Winona?
Winonat”
Right away, Eliza’s face fell, turning pale as a ghost. Winona slowly walked forward, feeling all eyes on her.
Seeing her, Eliza bit her lips and looked more pitiful. Christine glared at Winona,
Winona looked at these people and felt regretful for a moment. She thought, I shouldn’t have come here, even if Diane would be unhappy!
Diane, all smiles, grabbed Winona’s wrist. “Winona’s sweet. She made herbal tea just for me. I’m really happy.”
Winona smiled. She couldn’t stand everyone’s gaze anymore. Just as she was about to make an excuse to leave, someone suddenly asked, “Mrs. Patterson, this lady looks familiar. Who is she?”
Winona looked flustered, and so did Eliza. Eliza was biting her lip, holding her breath, not making a sound.
“Winona is…” Diane started. Winona’s eyes shot to Xavier and they locked gazes. Seeing he wasn’t gonna jump in, she bent down and gently took Diane’s hand, pleading, “Grandma Diane…
Diane’s eyes flickered. In the end, she just let out a heavy sigh. “Winona saved my life. If it weren’t for her, I would have been dead.”
Winona breathed a sigh of relief. Her simple black dress was showing off her perfect figure. Xavier couldn’t tear his eyes away from Winona as she bent down, his gaze deep and infiense.
Everyone started to compliment Winona. “So that’s the story. Thanks to her…”
“She’s so beautiful”
“She’s like someone touched by an angel.”
Winona became the focus, and Eliza’s face became paler. Although she knew the whole story, she still felt heartbroken. She thought, ‘All that attention should be mine. Why? Why does this woman get whatever I want?
