Chapter 19
Around ten o’clock, the people at the party gradually left. The fuss about Winona had blown over pretty quickly, and Eliza was hanging around a lot more. She stuck close to Xavier the whole time, like she was marking her territory.
After seeing off most of the guests, Xavier turned to leave, but stopped short. “Are you gonna follow me to the restroom?” he asked.
Eliza, her cheeks turning pink, halted in her tracks. She glanced around, noticed Winona wasn’t there, and nibbled her lip in distress. “Come back quickly. I’m afraid of being alone.”
Xavier gave her a look, “Why are you afraid?”
But Eliza just tugged on his sleeve all cutesy, like she always did. “No one really wants me here…except for Christine and you.”
He didn’t say a word, just gently peeled her hand off and walked away.
Looking at his back, Eliza bit her lip and looked more determined. Ever since her return, Xavier was a little indifferent to her, which made her unsure of his feelings for her.
After calling a taxi, Winona walked out of the restroom. Seeing Xavier walk toward her, flashbacks of their last awkward encounter at the restaurant bathroom flooded her mind. She instinctively stepped back.
Xavier caught up to her, eyed her new hairstyle, and asked, “Why did you change your hair?”
Winona said with a cold face, “Because I don’t like it. Don’t you understand such simple logic?”
Xavier understood what she was implying. He pulled her into his arms and pressed her against the wall of the corridor.
Winona didn’t expect that Xavier would do the same thing here. Her face darkened. She gritted her teeth and said, “What? You get a kick out of this?
Xavier chuckled. “So what if I do?”
“You’re shameful.” She glared at him, ice cold, and threw down a threat. “Try anything, and I swear, Grandma Diane break your legs.”
“You’ve gotten gutsy, but as long as we haven’t got the divorce certificate, you’re still mine. I can do whatever I want,” he said.
Winona scoffed, “Just three days to go!”
Xavier’s face fell. Just three days until the deadline, and Winona was counting each one. “So, should I make the most of these next three days as your hubby?” Xavier moved even closer.
Winona’s heart raced. Her eyes went wide, and she snapped, “Xavier!”
Right before they touched, Xavier stopped, his breath on her ear, “Stay with Grandma tonight,” and he backed off.
As he vanished from the corner, Winona turned to leave but caught sight of someone lurking behind a pillar. She pressed her lips together, tight. Eliza walked out gracefully, She clenched her fists and looked in the direction Xavier left. “Ms. Moore, let’s have a talk.”
Winona really didn’t want to get involved in anything related to Eliza anymore. It was pointless, but it seemed that Eliza didn’t think so. So Winona said, “One last time.”
In the backyard, they stood there, side by side. Eliza was stuck on the scene she’d just seen, them two all up on each other. They didn’t look like two people about to split. Eliza was scared.
She had to show everyone she was the one Xavier actually cared for. “Ms. Moore, I heard that you love Xavier very much, right?”
Winona looked sideways at this gentle, dignified, and elegant woman. Winona herself was wearing a black dress and had red curly hair, while Eliza was wearing a white dress and had long straight hair. They were completely different. “What exactly do you want to say?” Winona said.
Eliza turned to look at Winona and then suddenly chuckled, “Ms. Moore, can you swim?”
Winona’s brow crinkled. She smelled trouble. But before she knew it, Eliza had her wrist in a tight grip. “What are you doing?” Winona panicked.
Eliza leaned in close, saying, “Let’s find out who he really loves.”
“Are you crazy?!” As soon as Winona finished speaking, she was dragged into the swimming pool, and the cold water instantly flooded them. All Winona could think was, Eliza had totally lost her mind.
The moment Winona fell into the water, she heard someone exclaim, “Help! Someone has fallen into the water!”
