Chapter 8
“Her head was hit, but luckily it wasn’t serious. I gave her three stitches. Her arm should heal up in a few days. Everything else is all good,” said the doctor.
Eliza tugged at Xavier’s sleeves and kept crying. “I thought I was going to die when the car hit me, Xavier. I was freaking out, thinking what you were supposed to do without me.” After saying that, she tried to throw herself into his arms.
Xavier stopped her gently and said, “Tell me what happened.”
Eliza cried harder. She looked at the stunned Christine and asked, “Are you okay, Christine?”
“What?” It wasn’t until now that Christine came to herself. She looked at them, trying to shake off that crazy idea she had just now.
“Eliza got a divorce because she wanted to go back to you, Xavier. Her ex–husband wouldn’t agree to a divorce until she gave him a lot of money. But that man was a big gambler and lost it all. He kept bugging Eliza for more cash after that. She got fed up and said no. This lunatic started stalking and threatening her. Fortunately, she was only slightly injured,” Christine explained.
Eliza’s face was all sad, making her look super pitiful.
Seeing her look all hopeful at him, Xavier just frowned and said, “Rest up. I’ll handle it.” Then he turned to leave.
Eliza stopped him quickly and asked in confusion, “You got here so fast. Why are you leaving all of a sudden?”
Hearing this, Christine started nodding a lot and chimed in, “You can’t leave, Xavier. Eliza is just out of danger. She needs someone to be with her, someone close to her. What if her ex–husband shows up again?”
Xavier took a quick peek at her and said, “No one’s showing up. Plus, she’s got you.”
“Me? But…” Xavier left the ward before Christine could finish her words.
Eliza cried in shock, feeling heartbroken. “How could he do this to me, Christine? He doesn’t love me anymore, does he?”
Christine panicked when she saw Eliza burst into tears. “Don’t cry, Eliza. You’re the only one Xavier loves.” Thinking of something, she added, “If he didn’t care about you, he wouldn’t have left Winona and come to see you. He’s worried about you.”
Eliza was surprised. “He left Winona?”
Christine nodded like crazy. “Yes. I was with them. He bolted over here the second he found most important person to him.”
you were in the hospital. So don’t worry. You’re the
soon.” Christ
to comfort her.
“Really? Then why did he leave?” Eliza stared at the door, hoping Xavier would pop up any second.
“You know him well. He’s probably still mad at you for leaving him, but I’m sure you’ll get back together
Eliza nodded in doubt and lowered her head, biting her lip. She was thinking she had to do something to win him back. Ever since she returned, things just hadn’t felt right between them.
Looking at the red traffic light, Xavier made a call to the Patterson family’s driver.
“Have you sent her home?” Xavier asked.
“Sorry, Mr. Patterson,” the driver answered. “Mrs. Patterson didn’t want the ride. She grabbed a cab instead.”
Xavier hung up without saying another word. He scrolled through his contacts and stopped at Winona’s number. On his screen it said, “My Dear Wife,” and it got him thinking back to when she made him save her number like that,
One day, after she had just had sex with him, she snuggled into his arms and showed him her phone. “Look, I have you as ‘My Dear Husband‘, What’s my name on your phone?” She frowned when she saw her full name on his phone screen. So she made him change it, saying it was only fair.
Xavier thought it was no big deal because no one had access to his phone but her.
The busy signal brought him back to his senses. He pursed his lips, hung up the phone, and drove down to her apartment,
When he got there, he saw light pouring out of her windows. That meant she was still awake. So he stopped the engine and got out of the car.
