With a resounding slap, Tobias‘ palm landed on Kaia’s cheek.
“You wouldn’t dare!”
Kaia’s face was whipped to the side, and her cheek burned with pain.
She looked right back at him, zero fear in her eyes. “Why wouldn’t I? What’s there to be scared of?
“He doesn’t love me, so I’m not marrying him. Simple as that.”
Tobias was breathing hard, looking ready to explode. “Love? Is that gonna pay the bills? You know my company’s about to go under? If you just marry into the Graves family like you’re supposed to, we’re saved.
“You don’t, we’re done for!”
Tobias had no sons. Both of his wives gave birth to daughters.
And he was always riding for Kimberly, the younger one, because she knew how to sweet–talk him and boost his ego.
But Kaia? Stubborn as a mule!
Kaia threw him a fake smile. “Let it crash and burn then. That mess is already dead anyway. Going bankrupt might be the

“Even after it’s done, I can hold you down with my own money. You won’t have to depend on anyone else.”
Tobias was so mad his insides were hurting. “Come on! Your little check can’t even cover what I spend in a day.
“Wake up, Kaia. Without this arrangement, you think the Graves would even look your way?”
Kaia let out a soft chuckle. “Well, why don’t you let Kimberly
have him then?”
Kimberly’s eyes got big. “Humph, like you’d actually give it up.”
Kaia made a “tch” sound and was done with their nonsense. She grabbed her bag and strode out briskly.

Outside, Alden was posted up against the car, smoking.
As soon as he saw Kaia coming, he killed the cigarette and tossed it in the trash.
Then he spotted that red mark lighting up her face.
“Did Mr. Domont hit you?” He frowned and reached for her face, but Kaia just swatted his hand away.

“None of your business.”
Alden’s whole vibe went dark.
Her father is right–she’s stubborn as hell!
His voice went softer. “Get in the car. We’re still getting the marriage license tomorrow.”
“Save it, Alden.” Kaia shut him down. “It’s over between us. Really.”

Still talking marriage like nothing after all this mess? Arrogant idiot.
Hearing that, Alden’s sympathy turned to pure rage.
“Kaia, stop being so irrational! Luna’s my sister! And you’re my wife. How many times do I have to beat this into your head?” he snapped.
“But she’s not even your real sister. You don’t share blood. Can you swear you’ll cut her off for good?” Kaia stared him down hard, not backing down for a second.
When Alden looked away, Kaia had her answer.
“See, you can’t do it, and neither can I. Just thinking about you two makes me sick.”

Alden took a deep breath, then grabbed her and basically threw her in the car.
“Be sick all you want. But breaking up? That’s off the table!”
He stepped on the gas, and the car shot off into the night like a bolt of lightning.
Kaia shot a cold glance at the man beside her. His jaw was clenched tight–clearly pissed about something.
But she wasn’t having it.
Seriously? He’s got room to be pressed?
Feeling the car was still speeding, Kaia warned, “Are you trying to get me killed? Slow down before I call 911.”
Alden glanced over, catching her pale face and shaking lips.
Right–she’d been whining about her stomach earlier.
He finally eased off the gas, letting the car slow down.
The second they parked, Kaia jumped out and slammed the door hard enough to wake the dead.
Face like ice, she bolted upstairs straight for the guest room.

Alden followed right behind. He stood outside her door for a second, then crashed in another guest room.
Neither of them even looked at the master bedroom.
Kaia worked her stomach, handled some client stuff, checked
her calendar, lined up next week’s cases, then powered down her
computer.
She pulled out her phone and started scrolling through her
socials.
She was still logged into her burner account.
Kaia only followed Luna on this one–forgot to switch back after her last stalking session.
Then, she saw a notification pop up and couldn’t help herself. Luna had posted five minutes ago.
She clicked on it.
[My brother gave me this “Angel’s Heart” as a welcome home gift. Isn’t it gorgeous, guys?]
Ha, so that “Angel’s Heart” that went for 47 million dollars at Sotheby’s… Alden’s doing.
Just then, a knock sounded on the door.

There was Alden, one hand in his pocket, the other holding some fancy box. “Saw this at the mall during my business trip. Looked like your style. Here.”
If Kaia hadn’t just seen Luna’s post, she might’ve thought Alden was finally acting right.
But looking at that jewelry box now, instead of popping off, she just gave him a faint smile. “Oh, how sweet of you. You really shouldn’t have bothered.”
Alden’s face got tight. He always caught that shade in her voice. “It’s no biggie. A couple hundred thousand dollars is peanuts.”
Kaia grabbed the box and tried closing the door, but Alden wasn’t moving.
She arched an eyebrow. “What, gol more presents?”
Alden felt a twitch in his temple.
“No, just a heads–up. You know we’re getting our marriage license tomorrow…”
Meanwhile, Kaia was checking this text that popped up: [Kaia, you with Alden? Bel Luna can make him drop everything and come running with just one call.]

And then, in an instant, the message was retracted.
Alden looked visibly annoyed. “Kaia, I’m talking to you,” he grumbled.

Kaia met his gaze all innocent–like. “Sorry, what did you say?”
Alden repeated himself, his tone laced with impatience, “Said we’re getting our marriage license tomorrow. Don’t sleep in, okay?”
The next second, his phone started buzzing in his pocket.
He checked it, and his whole mood switched up. “Luna? Where are you? I’m coming right now. Don’t move!”
He didn’t even look at Kaia before he ran downstairs. Moments later, she heard the screech of tires as his car sped off.
Kaia just laughed to herself.
Yeah, right. Marriage license? My foot!
Not one to waste time, Kaia took a picture of that necklace and sent it to a high–end second–hand store.
This time, she went all out. Packed up everything she bought for their room–sheets, scented candles, even the soap–throwing it all in boxes like she meant business.

She yanked open his wardrobe and grabbed all the shirts and ties she bought him over time, adding them to her haul.
Dragging another suitcase behind her, Kaia headed down.
Serena looked up in surprise. “Mrs… Ms. Domont, you’re going on another work trip?” she asked.
Kaia offered a soft smile. “No, I’m moving out. Not coming back
anymore.”
