Chapter 7
That night, I received a call from Zach. The voice on the other end of the phone was echoing. He probably called me from the stairwell.
Zach’s voice was hoarse and a little tearful. “Winona, I know I was wrong. Please come back. I really can’t live without you.
“We have always had a good relationship. Do you really have the heart to divorce me?
“Do you remember when we just got married? We were so loving at that time. Everyone envied me for marrying a good wife.”

I interrupted his memories and said coldly, “Stop talking nonsense. When you locked me in the kitchen and asked me to cook for Melanie, why didn’t you think that I was your wife? When I begged you to open the door and take me to the hospital, why didn’t you think that I was your wife? Zach, God is watching. If you still cherish our past love, sign the divorce.”
He cried on the phone. “Baby, I really know I was wrong. I promise you that I will never contact Melanie in the future. I only recognize the child you gave birth to, okay? I really don’t want to divorce you.”
When I was about to hang up, I heard Melanie’s voice. Zach obviously covered the receiver, but Melanie’s voice was so loud
that I could still hear it.
“Zach, who are you talking to? The bath water is ready, and come and help me take a bath. Zach? Come on, I’m cold without clothes.”
When I was pregnant, the doctor told me to stay in bed. I didn’t take a bath for a month, and my hair itched so much that my scalp hurt. I begged Zach to help me wash my hair, but he was disgusted.
“Winona, bear with it. Isn’t it said on the Internet that not washing your hair for a long time is good for your hair? When the baby is born, your hair will become thicker and brighter. Kill two birds with one stone, don’t you think?”
He found washing my hair disgusting, but he enjoyed bathing Melanie.
I really didn’t have the patience, to listen to him. “Stop stalling. Divorce quickly and give Melanie a name. Don’t commit bigamy!”
I thought Zach would stop for some time. Unexpectedly, less than two months later, he blocked my door directly.
He looked more haggard than the last time we met, smelling of cigarettes and alcohol, and his eyes were empty.
“Winona, can’t you come back? I really miss you. I promise you, after Melanie gives birth, I will drive her away. I will never see her again, okay?”
His clothes seemed to have not been washed for a long time, and there were yellow stains on the collar of his shirt. In the past, Zach would not touch such clothes.
I didn’t want to talk nonsense with him anymore, so I turned around and prepared to stay in the hotel, but he hugged me from behind. “Baby, please help me. For the sake of our many years of marriage, please help me again!
“I took too many days off, and the company has fired me. Help me take care of the family, and let me go out to work. Can’t we live like before?
“You miss that kind of life too, don’t you? Please, Winona. Please promise me!
“Melanie specifically asked you to take care of her. She had a hard time with the pregnancy, and she was not satisfied with any of the nannies I hired. Please help us. When this child is born, treat it as your own, okay?
“I promise I will never hit you again.”
I was shocked by his shamelessness. It took me a lot of effort to finally break free from him.
“Zach, if you don’t leave, I’ll call the police!”
