Chapter 1
Why was my fiance’s name and my best friend’s name on a wedding invitation card?
My hands were trembling as I held the piece of paper, reading it over and over again.
“Ma’am,” a female voice startled me out of my thoughts. 1 flinched, looking up at the secretary
*1 said,” she started with furrowed brows, “there are no open applications,” she reminded me that I was here to apply for a job, but her rejection was the least of my worries.
1 waved the invitation card I’d snatched off her counter, in her face, “where did you get this?!” I didn’t care that I was starting to raise my voice.
She backed away a little, her hand slowly reaching for the telephone on the desk. Her face was etched with worry
“Answer me!” 1 yelled, causing heads to turn my way.
That must have done it for her because the next thing I knew she was calling security. That drew ΠΕ back to n

my senses.
I raised a hand in the air to stop her, “there will be no need for that,” I said with my voice trembling. I became conscious of the people surrounding rue, staring like I was a lunatic. I clutched my bag even tighter, taking one step back and then another until I was out of the hotel I’d come to apply for a job.
Immediately 1 was outside, I rummaged through my bag with a shaky hand trying to find my phone.
I pulled it out and dialed Darren.
Darren and I had been together for four years now since freshman year in college, and now that we were graduates, he was the same reason I desperately needed a job. I’d lent him my savings of over two hundred thousand dollars, and he was supposed to be investing that money overseas for a massive turn over.
So why on earth did I just see a wedding card that had his picture and my best friend since high school, Layla’s picture dated for today!
There was no response.
I chuckled nervously.
This had to be a mistake.
My mind trailed to the address I’d seen on the invitation card, I almost jumped in front of the approaching cab as I tried to wave him over.
He came to a halt in front of me, the door handle was almost pulled off its hinges as I forced it open.
“Ella’s wedding hall, please as fast as you can” 1 instructed the driver who took off on massive speed.
I sat back, wrapping my arms around myself. I pulled my white office shirt out of the pants Td nicked them in and barely blinked.
This had to be some type of mistake, I thought, heart racing as 1 headed to the venue.
I laughed to myself a few more times, and I caught the driver’s worried eyes in the rearview mirror a number of times but the last thing I could do
I stopped in front of the venue minutes later, “Darren wouldn’t be so crazy to get married to my best friend, in my literal hometown, just hours away from the house we live in together?”
There were security men stationed outside the hall and I shook my head in age. It already screamed expensive from the doorstep with white and purple flowers stationed everywhere.
I spent the entirety of our relationship paying for all our bills, he would never be able to afford this, so again, this was all a misunderstanding.
“You need an invitation card to get in man, a security man frowned at me. He looked at me from head to toe with my shabby hair, wrinkled clothes and worn out shoes and must have guessed I wasn’t a guest.
“You don’t understand,” my voice was croaking now, “I need to get

“Ma’am“” A few of them flooded after me as I raced into the hall, causing all the guests to turn the heads my way, bursting out with m shock.
The bride must have panicked by the chaos as she immediately ran to the groom’s arms where they stood at the altar.
I stopped in my tracks. My legs almost giving away.
Layla, was in Darren’s arms, dressed in a wedding gown. I blinked multiple times, this had to be a dream.
I walked forward, the murmurs growing louder, until I was in front of them both.
The color had washed away from their faces by now.
“Darren!” I called, my voice breaking, “shouldn’t you be in Canada? For that…” Tears filled my
He immediately pulled Layla behind him, as if I was a dangerous threat.
“What’s happening here, why I croaked, trailing off as he suddenly yelled.
my eyes.
*Security! What are you doing when there’s an intruder here?!” He yelled on top of his voice.
Before I could process anything more, a handful of men had my hands locked behind me as they dragged me away.
The tears began to fall, as I still couldn’t understand what on earth was happening.
“Darren! Layla! After everything I’ve done for you!” I yelled on top of my voice as they pulled me out of the venue.
The security men tossed me like trash and I fell flat to the floor, wincing at the pain.
There
murmurs and
was no point being here, I got to my feet, my head down as I walked away, “what’s happening?” I kept muttering under my breath
I was so lost I didn’t hear the honk of the horn coming in the distance,
By the time I noticed the truck driver, he was barely inches from me. Before I knew what was happening, a strong arm had yanked me by my wrist.. pulling me away from the road.
In shock. I stared at the green eyed, dark haired man in a suit as he snaked his hand under my waist.
My eyes widened as I tried to catch my breath when all of a sudden his pink lips shifted into a smirk.
“What a surprise darling,” his deep voice caused goosebumps to trail down my body, “fancy to see you here. I was just talking to my mom about
you.”
His eyes suddenly focused on a figure behind me and I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion.
“Mom,” he started, “this is the woman I was talking abour, the woman I’ll be marrying today.”
