Chapter 62
When I opened my eyes, everything felt blurry. The lights above me were too white, the sheets too stiff. My head was pounding slightly, and I blinked slowly until the ceiling tiles came into focus.
I was in a hospital
I turned my head, squinting against the sterile lighting, and saw Natasha sitting in a chair beside my bed. She looked up immediately. eyes wide with relief.
“Oh my God, finally,” she said, standing up and reaching for my hand. “You scared the hell out of me.”
I tried to sit up. “What… what happened?”
A doctor stepped in just then, clipboard in hand. He had a kind smile, but it didn’t do much to ease the nerves rattling in my chest,
“You’re awake. Good,” he said. “You fainted earlier today. Do you remember anything before you passed out?”
I tried to think. “I was leaving the Airbnb. I had just said goodbye to Natasha. Everything felt fine. I don’t understand.”
He nodded. Ti seems your body has been under more strain than you realized. Exhaustion, a lack of proper nutrition, and elevated stress levels likely caused the fainting.”
I blinked at him. “But I was literally resting at the Airbnb. All I did was eat, sleep, and talk. I even stayed offline the entire time.”
“Mental stress can be just as taxing as physical activity,” he said gently. “We’ve given you fluids, and we’ll be running a few more tests just to rule out anything else. But overall, you’re going to be fine”
He gave me a reassuring smile and made a note on his clipboard. I’ll leave you to rest. The nurse will bring your discharge papers soon.”
Once the door shut behind him, Natasha pulled the chair closer and sank into it. Her expression was still clouded with worry.
“You really freaked me out, El. I didn’t know what to do. You collapsed out of nowhere, and I didn’t have access to your phone or anything. I thought something was seriously wrong.”
I looked at her, feeling a pang of guilt. I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to make you worry, I didn’t expect that to happen either?
She sighed and rubbed her temples. “That makes two of us.”
“Any news about… you know, the Gypsy slap incident?”
Natasha gave me a tight–lipped smile. “It hasn’t blown up yet. But a few blogs posted something vague. No footage though, so you’re safe
for now.
I leaned back against the pillow, “Great. That’s all I need, public humiliation.”
“Let’s not worry about that now. Just rest.”
There was a soft knock on the door and the doctor returned, followed by a nurse who was pushing a small machine on wheels.
“One last quick check before we send you home,” he said, smiling. He glanced at the monitor, then at the nurse, who nodded and handed him a new chart. He flipped through it quickly.
“Alright, Ms. Ellen,” he said, looking up from the paper. “We’re wrapping things up now. You’ll be discharged shortly. But before that.. congratulations.”
My brows pulled together. Tm sorry, what?”
He glanced between me and Natasha, as if wondering who to address. Then he smiled again.
“You’re pregnant
Time stopped.
Istared at him, stunned. Tm….. what?”
“Pregnant,” he repeated, kindly. “It’s still really early. Based on the scans, everything looks normal so far, but we recommend follow–up with an OB–GYN soon.
Chapter 62
My brain refused to process. I could hear Natasha gasp beside me.
“Are you sure?” I asked, heart hammering.
“Positive. Your blood work confirmed it.”
My hand instinctively moved to my stomach.
Pregnant.
With Karl’s baby.
