Chapter 65
My heart dropped to my stomach. I looked at Karl, completely confused.
Come on, ask him for more… Darren said.
“He won’t fall for it, my voice came back.
He stopped the audio recording his body was tensed. He says, “this was on the same day you were found in the hotel with Darren.”
“This isn’t real,” I said, shaking my head. “I never said that.”
“It’s your voice,” he said calmly. That took me off guard, I didn’t expect him to doubt me in any way and form especially not like this.
“I know, but I never said that. Not like that. This is… This is out of context or… or something.” I tried to play the audio again, listening closer. “This was at the bar. When he followed me. Remember?”
Karl didn’t move.
I stepped toward him. “Karl, this is edited or recorded out of context. I don’t even remember saying half of that. You know what happened that night…Darren cornered me.”
He didn’t say anything
I stared at him, suddenly feeling cold despite the room being warm. “You think I planned something with him?”
He finally spoke. “It’s not about what I think. It’s what I heard. What’s already gone around. The press hasn’t picked it up yet but my legal team sent it to me this morning”
I laughed bitterly. “You think I’m trying to scam you!”
He looked down for a moment. “I don’t know what to think.”
I swallowed hard, trying not to cry. “You know me. I live in your house. I’ve slept in your bed. I’ve shared things with you and you hear one audio clip, one clearly shady recording, and you just believe it?”
He rubbed his jaw. His face was blank again. “That’s why I’m asking you what it is.”
“It’s bullshit,” I snapped. “That’s what it is. You think I’d do that to you?”
He looked at me for a long second, then finally sat on the couch, elbows resting on his knees. “You need to understand how this sounds”
“I understand how it sounds but more than that, I know what it actually is. Its a setup. Darren did this.”
Karl didn’t respond.
My chest was tight. “You were supposed to trust me
“I did.”
“Then what is this? Why am I being interrogated?”
His expression finally shifted. His shoulders sagged slightly. “I’m not interrogating you. I just needed to hear your explanation.
“Well, now you’ve heard it.”
He nodded slowly but didn’t say anything else.
I turned away from him and folded my arms, every part of me trembling. This was the worst–case scenario.
Just as I was about to speak again, I heard a voice from behind us. Sharp. Confident. Familiar,
“You know, she’s very good at lying. You don’t know anything about her. You picked her up from some gutter house, so who knows how far she’s going to go.
My heart dropped. I turned slowly and saw Gypsy standing behind us, arms crossed, smirk tight on her lips. My stomach twisted.
“So this was you, I muttered, staring straight at her. “You’re the one behind all of this.”
Chapter 65
I turned to Karl, Siepping closer, my voice rising slightly. “You’d really trust her words over mine?
His
expression didn’t flinch. His face stayed still unreadable. Cold
“You’re just villainizing Gypsy,” he said. “She’s done nothing wrong. She’s the reason this hasn’t gone public. She managed to keep this whole mess private. You should be grateful,”
I shook my head, trying to make sense of what I was hearing “She’s lying Karl, you have to believe me. That audio was taken our of context. You know Darren. You know how he talks. I never said anything like that.”
He looked at me. There wasn’t a flicker of doubt in his eyes. Only distance.
“I dated Gypsy for five years,” he said. Tve known her longer than I’ve known you. And come to think of it… I don’t really know you at all. So no, I wouldn’t be able to tell if you’re lying or not.”
His words hit harder than anything Gypsy could’ve thrown at me.
1 stared at him for a moment, blinking through the burn rising behind my eyes. I swallowed the lump in my throat and nodded once. slowly.
Then what’s the point?” I asked quietly. “What’s the point of me staying here, if you can’t even trust me?”
He didn’t answer.
I stepped back, straightened my shoulders, and kept my voice steady. Please send me the contract cancellation details. I will be more than ready to compensate if I’m the one breaking it”
And with that, I turned around and walked
I didn’t look back,
I didn’t even get to tell him I was pregnant.
